Trump Claims Role in Easing India-Pakistan Tensions Again, Modi Remains Silent
Trump remarked that suddenly you see a different kind of missile (referring to the escalating tensions between the two countries). He claimed he helped resolve it. The US President added, “I hope when I leave here in two days, I won’t hear that it’s still ongoing, though I think it’s been resolved.”
This is the sixth time since last Saturday that Trump has claimed the US mediated a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan. On April 22, following a terrorist attack in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, India conducted ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7, launching airstrikes on nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). In response, Pakistan attempted to target Indian military installations on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian Army retaliated by targeting several Pakistani military establishments. On May 10, both countries agreed to immediately halt all military actions.
Indian government sources have consistently stated that the agreement to cease all firing and military operations across land, air, and sea was reached through talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan. They clarified that no third party was involved in this process. However, Trump continues to claim credit for brokering a ceasefire between the two nations.
He added, “So I said, you know, I can fix this. I can fix anything. Let me fix it. Let’s bring you together. How long have you been fighting? About 1,000 years. Oh, that’s a long time.” Trump continued, “I wasn’t sure about it. I wasn’t sure about brokering a deal. It was a tough job. They’ve been fighting for a long time, but we fixed it. Everyone was very happy. I’m telling you, it looked like it was really going to spiral out of control.”
Last Saturday, Trump announced in a social media post that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following “overnight talks mediated by the US.” In another post, he offered to work with both countries to “resolve” the Kashmir issue.
Trump credited Washington for facilitating the “historic and courageous decision” to halt the conflict. However, India has consistently maintained that the Kashmir issue is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan, with no room for third-party intervention.
