Shoot-at-sight orders issued amid violence in Manipur
IMPHAL:Shoot-at-sight orders have been issued tocontain the law and situation arising out of large-scale violence that erupted in Manipur.
The situation in Manipur remains extremely grim due to the ongoing violence. Army and Assam Rifles personnel have taken charge in the violence-affected districts.The governor has issued an order to shoot at sight the rioters. Meanwhile, the Union Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Minister of the state and inquired about the situation. The Chief Minister appealed to the local people to maintain peace and communal harmony.

According to reports,11 people were injured in organized violence at Saikul in Kangpokpi district on Wednesday night. Clashes between the agitators and the security forces resulted in the death of two people. Army's flag march was conducted in the violence-affected areas on Thursday. The army has so far given shelter to more than four thousand people from the violence-affected areas.
In Manipur, orders have been issued to shoot rioters directly in violence-hit areas. Governor Anusuiya Uike has given its approval to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Orders have been sent to all District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Magistrates and all Executive Magistrates/Special Executive Magistrates of the affected areas of the state.
Meanwhile, in view of the tense situation in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and communal harmony. The Chief Minister said that incidents of vandalism and arson in Imphal, Bishnupur and Moreh districts were unexpected. Chief Minister Singh appealed to the concerned protesters to desist from such violent activities.
On Wednesday, widespread violence broke out in the hill districts of Bishnupur, Firjaol, Jiribam, Imphal West, Thoubal, Tengnopal, Kakching and Kangpokpi following a solidarity rally by the All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM). Section 144 was imposed in eight districts of Manipur overnight. Internet services have been stopped in all these districts. Army and central paramilitary forces have been deployed in the districts to control the worsening situation.
It may be noted that the All Tribal Students Union is opposing the inclusion of Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list by the tribal organizations of Manipur following a High Court decision.
