Moldova: President Maia Sandu re-elected for second term

In Moldova, Pro-Western President Maia Sandu has been re-elected for a second term. Sandu defeated her opponent, Alexandr Stoianoglo, from the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, by over 10 percentage points. With more than 99 percent of the ballots counted, Sandu received 55.26 percent of the vote.

The elections were marred by several incidents, including reported bomb threats at four polling stations in the diaspora, where Sandu received significant support. However, the election revealed public grievances, as Sandu’s overall vote increased largely due to the backing of Moldovans abroad. She lost by a narrow margin within Moldova.

US President Joe Biden congratulated Sandu on her victory, saying Russia had failed to undermine Moldova’s democratic institutions and election processes. While, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denounced the election as the “most undemocratic” in the country’s post-Soviet history.
