IMPHAL: Strong resentment is brewing among  Wushu lovers across India over non-inclusion of top manipur wushu players and renowned Wushu coach.Reportedly, two top national wushu players and India’s seasoned Taolu Coach, who has produced a number of international and National champions have been kept out of the Indian squad for the 19th Asian Games 2023 to be held from 23 September to 8 October at Hangzhou, China.

According to a report in The Sangai Express,Wushu Taolu players, Hanjabam Karnajit Sharma and Leimapokpam Sanatombi Chanu from Manipur, both national champions were undergoing Asian Games coaching at Patiala to play in Asian games. But,it is founfd that the names of these two players and the coach are excluded from the Indian squad.

Taolu Coach Mayanglambam Sachidananda though a  senior most  and experienced international Taolu coach and has produced a number of  national and international Taolu champions has been kept out of the squad.

Now,after the denial of entry into the Asian games, the two wushu players' dream have been shattered.

These two players were dropped from the Indian squad on the ground that they have no international tournament achievement to show their talents.According to the report, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has been  responsible for the selection have taken the Moscow Wushu Star Championship 2023 as the criteria.

On the otherhand, the Wushu players have alleged that due to the Covid-19 pandemic major international championships could not be held which were postponed till date. There was no chance of participating in such tournaments to show the performance for the country.

Mayanglambam Amitkumar, a Wushu coach and a former international Indian Wushu player from Manipur has appealed to the Ministry to reconsider its decision. He said that the performances of the players at the trials should be considered to clinch medals in the Asian Games. But they have taken one tournament, Moscow Wushu Star as a criteria. It is an invitation tournament. We didn’t have any pre-government sanction for the tournament. So, most of our best players didn’t go for that tournament”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Wushu Association of India as well as the Sports minister of Manipur has written to the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports to reconsider its decision and consider including the two Manipuri Wushu players and the coach so that justice may be delivered to them.(With Inputs from The Sangai Express).
