Rescued gharial hatchlings released into Satkosia gorge

 ANGUL: Satkosia Wildlife Division Authorities who rescued 12 gharial hatchlings during the monsoon have again released into Satkosia gorge successfully on Saturday. All the released gharial hatchlings are safe and sound in the gorge after the release as sighted by forest officials today. The hatchlings that were four to six inches length during the rescue are now grown up to 1 to 2 feet long, said the Divisional Forest Officer Saroj Kumar Panda.

Panda said, in order to provide life security to gharial hatchlings during monsoon 12 kids were rescued from the gorge and were lodged at gharial research and Conservation Unit at Tikarpara. As per the estimate there were a total of 35 hatchlings got birth in the gorge out of which 12 were rescued. Because during the monsoon there was a fear that they might be swept away to downstream.

 

 Panda said as there were mortality in last year, this year special care was given to prevent the mortality. They were lodged in a special pool created in the unit where facilities of thermo regulator admin installed.

“Due to other steps taken in the unit, we could prevent mortality among the gharial hatchlings. From four to six inches long their size were increased upto 1 to 2 feet in this period”,he added, claiming that all are in good health conditions after the release”.

All the released gharials are in good health condition. He said after nearly 60 years gharial in Satkosia gorge gave birth to hatchlings in the year 2020-21.Till then in each year the gharials are breeding in the gorge.
